Bulgaria
represents one of the countries where most trafficking victims
come from.
Although
Bulgarian law does not actually define trafficking in human
beings, articles of its criminal code do sanction certain aspects
of this practice.
For example,
article 142 (section IV) punishes both abduction and the
deprivation of individual liberty, particularly when the
act is committed with the intention of removing the individual
from the country or when it is carried out by an organised criminal
group. Article 156 (section VIII) condemns debauchery, and
the recommended punishment is stronger if the victim is a minor
or if he or she is taken out of the country.
