Improving
provisions of assistance and protection
for victims of trafficking in human beings
The
project which the ComitŽ
Contre l'Esclavage Moderne (CCEM) presented
to the European Commission in June 2000 got under way on December
1st of the same year. It will last for two years.
During
the course of the project, the CCEM will work in partnership with
the following organisations: the International Organization
for Migration (IOM) (based in Brussels, Paris, Vienna, Rome,
and Athens); Pag-Asa and Payoke (based in Belgium);
and Differenza Donna, Associazione ãOn the Roadä,
and Servizio Migranti Caritas (based in Italy).
The
countries concerned by the project are Belgium, France, Italy,
Austria, Germany, and Greece.
The
project's objective is to record, analyse, compare and promote
information about the best methods of providing assistance and
protection to victims of trafficking in human beings. The project's
general aims are to help victims integrate into destination countries
or reintegrate into their countries of origin.
The
following activities will be carried out within the framework
of this project: actions designed to disseminate information
and raise awareness within public institutions; the lobbying of
the European Parliament; the creation or reinforcement of an assistance
network for victims; and the production of pedagogical materials,
such as a brochure, video, and guide, as well as the creation
of the present Internet site. As the project comes to term, a
Round Table will be organised at the European Parliament.
The
project is aimed at staff of NGOs, of international and intergovernmental
organisations, of social services departments, and, more generally,
at staff of concerned law-enforcement, legal, and government agencies.
The aim is to give preference to the categorisation of 'victim
of trafficking' over that of 'illegal immigrant'.
