The ComitŽ Contre l'Esclavage Moderne (CCEM) based in Paris and created in 1994 is the coordinator of the Daphne Project (00/017/WC).

Its main objective is to combat all forms of servitude, assist, and, if necessary, release the victims of modern slavery. The CCEM offers these victims social, legal and administrative support, together with protection and accommodation in its reception centre.

In connection with its activities regarding the exchange of information and raising awareness of this problem among public institutions in France and the European Union as a whole, the CCEM has been behind the introduction in France of the ãMission d'information parliamentaire commune sur les diverses formes d'esclavage moderneä.

At the European level, the CCEM has initiated the creation of anti-slavery committees in Austria, Belgium, Spain and Italy, and has established partnerships with various European NGOs.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), an independent, intergovernmental, non-profit organisation set up in Brussels in 1951. IOM has become a leading international organisation working with migrants and governments to provide humane responses in the area of migration management.

IOM conducts activities in support of voluntary return to and reintegration assistance of migrants in their countries of origin, devises measures to combat trafficking in human beings, organises mass information campaigns and sets up migration medical and public health programmes.

There are currently 59 IOM counter-trafficking projects, operational or in the pipeline, targeting 49 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. IOM's counter-trafficking activities include seminars, information gathering and research, technical cooperation, information dissemination, return and reintegration activities for victims of trafficking in their countries of origin, and counselling and medical services.

Large-scale information campaigns have been successfully conducted in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Ukraine.

The Brussels-based organisation Pag-Asa, whose activities are interrelated with the Act passed in Belgium on 13 April 1995, containing provisions aimed at abolishing trafficking in human beings and child pornography, and the enabling ministerial circulars of 7 July 1994 and 13 January 1997 on measures to assist victims.

Pag-Asa, which means 'hope' in Tagalog (the most widely spoken language in the Philippines), aims to give a sign of hope to victims and combat practices that reduce human beings to mere commodities.

As a reception centre, Pag-Asa offers legal, administrative, social and medical support to victims of trafficking in human beings. Information and awareness-raising activities on the phenomenon are also organised regularly.

The association Payoke based in Antwerp was created in 1988 to defend the interests of sex workers in their fight for emancipation and to combat all forms of forced prostitution.

The centre is run in close collaboration with the University of Antwerp's prevention campaigns on HIV/STD targeting sex workers.

The activities of Payoke are interrelated with the Act passed in Belgium on 13 April 1995, containing provisions aimed at abolishing trafficking in human beings and child pornography, and the enabling ministerial circulars of 7 July 1994 and 13 January 1997 on measures to assist victims.

Victims of trafficking are welcomed and offered protection at the Asmodee reception centre in Antwerp. They benefit from legal, administrative, social and medical support.

Although the direct provision of assistance for victims is its main activity, Payoke also fosters links with national and international organisations pursuing the same objectives, and conducts awareness-raising and information exchange aimed at influencing the government to improve the status of victims of trafficking.

The association On the Road offers social support to people who have been forced into prostitution, especially immigrant women and children who are victims of trafficking.

On the Road offers legal, administrative, social and medical support to victims of human trafficking via its street units and drop-in centres, accommodation in specialised centres or with volunteer families, and through specific schemes that help victims undergo training and seek reintegration into society through employment.

The association undertakes research and training activities, and works in the victims' countries of origin. It lobbies the government and works in a network with other associations pursuing the same objectives.

On the Road is a member of the Committee for the Coordination of Governmental Actions against the Sexual Exploitation of Women and Children at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry for Equal Opportunities and the Ministry for Social Affairs, and the coordinator of the National Round Table on Prostitution and Trafficking in Women.

Created in 1989, Differenza Donna is a women's association that provides help for women who have suffered physical or psychological abuse.

Differenza Donna conducts information and awareness-raising campaigns on this phenomenon. It conducts training courses aimed at law enforcement agents, students, teachers and hospital staff.

The association manages three reception centres in Rome, one of which specialises in the provision of accommodation, protection and assistance for young women who are victims of trafficking.

Differenza Donna has issued a video and a book entitled ãSchiave d'Occidenteä, a collection of the testimonies of ten young women who fell prey to traffickers who planned to exploit them through forced prostitution.

Servizio Migranti Caritas based in Turin, provides accommodation, a readiness to listen, information and legal advice to immigrants in coordination with immigrant communities.

The organisation maintains a database of job requests and job offers for immigrants and organises courses in Italian and vocational training.

Servizio Migranti Caritas has set up a women's project providing protection and support for victims of trafficking who are exploited through prostitution. A network of families offers accommodation for victims. Legal, administrative, social and medical support is also provided.

What is particularly unusual about the work of Servizio Migranti Caritas in Turin is its partnerships with the private sector, cooperatives and businesses, aimed at ensuring the long-term social integration of victims.
